Cristian Gutierrez brought home only the second WSOP bracelet ever won by a Colombian player — the first since David Ospina in 2018. On the bubble of the final table, he was down to just one chip which was equal to a single big blind. Winner Phovieng Keokham and runner-up Christopher Zollo had been grinding smaller $200–$400 tournaments from time to time, so this was a major breakthrough for both. Michael Wilklow has been grinding live tournaments under $500 since the end of 2022, racking up over 100 small cashes in just two and a half years.

It’s interesting that on the final day, apart from Josh Arieh heads-up and Christopher Tong finishing sixth, Benny didn’t eliminate a single opponent from the tournament. Glaser entered that stage of the tournament as the chip leader. After eliminating Jeevan Lobo in third place, Nataraj entered heads-up play against Laurance Essak with a 2-to-1 chip lead. In the top five, after winning a big pot against Horacio Chavez, she moved into the chip lead. Interestingly, just ten days earlier, Rubin had won a PLO event with the same buy-in at the Aria Poker Classic series.
On June 2, 2011, the World Series of Poker and Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté announced plans for an officially sanctioned special fundraising event, known as The Big One for One Drop, starting on July 1, 2012, with a record US$1 million entry fee. The 2023 Main Event took the record for entries, first-place prize, and prize pool. In July 2010, it was announced that the winner of the 2010 Main Event would receive just under US$9 million. Currently, Texas hold ’em, Omaha hold ’em and Seven-card stud and their lowball variants are played.
The first day of the final table was aired on ESPN2 and the final day on ESPN, with both days also streamed on ESPN3 and WSOP.com. But, as someone who walked by the media room a half dozen times this summer and never saw a soul inside it, I doubt people would grasp just how many people were in there. By the end of Bellagio Cup, my boss Jeff Holsey offered me a full-time role, but only if I promised not to drop out of school to take it.
